Trapped Behind the Window Pane

She wanted to explore the Earth just as badly as she needed to breathe, if not more. Existence, she thought, was meant to adventure beyond the confines of her boring, white picket fenced house.

She stared out the window, feeling imprisoned by the thin glass separating her from running away from her simple life. She would run far; she just knew it. Hills and valleys wouldn’t slow her down. Oceans would seem an easy swim, and mountains would be a brisk walk up to see the world above her home.

She watched as her breath made clouded spots against the clear glass. Oh how she felt so trapped as she watched it happen. In the open air, her breath would be nothing but a subtle whisper among the noises all around her.

Everyone else in her life seemed so content to stay planted in the concrete world, but no, not her. She wanted to turn concrete jungles into real ones: roads into rolling hills and buildings into trees.

That was the life she envisioned, one she yearned for.

She turned away from the window, just as her mother called her to dinner.

“Coming,” she reluctantly said. She felt the pull of the outside world behind her as she walked away and further into the concrete structure where her family sat for dinner, happy as can be.
